  • Don’t mention any failures on the part of the retiree. It’s not a time to say how he lost that big order.

  • Don’t talk about the future in a negative way.
  • Don’t ever drink alcohol before giving a speech.
  • Don’t mention the fact that  he was well known for always being late or slipping away early.
  • Do not say anything critical that will fester in his memory for years to come. Be gracious.
  • Retirement speeches often refer to the retiree playing golf. Choose to refer to something a little different.
  • Don’t neglect to mention his family.
  • Don’t forget to do some research to enable you to make the speech personal as well as positive.
